Know Your Goals

The first step is crucial: you need to know what you want to achieve. What do you hope to achieve with Pilates? This answer will determine which type of class will benefit you most and help you find the right instructor. Pilates attracts people with a wide range of goals, so matching your needs with the appropriate Pilates class and instructor is essential for achieving your desired results.

Finding the right Pilates instructor for you

There is a huge variation in Pilates instructors and Pilates classes, due to the unregulated nature of the industry. It’s essential to find an instructor whose skill set matches your goals. Training to become a Pilates instructor can vary from a weekend course to one (like mine) which is spread over several years. Additionally, consider the instructor’s qualifications beyond Pilates. For example, if you’re looking to address back pain, seek an instructor with a background in Therapy (such as physio, Sports therapy etc).

Mat Pilates vs Reformer Pilates

Decide which type of Pilates class will help achieve your goals. Equipment-based Pilates, such as reformer Pilates, involves more resistance and can be beneficial for those who need to improve strength. For instance, professional athletes looking to enhance performance or individuals with back pain who need core strengthening might benefit from this type of class. Consider your goals and personal preferences when making this choice.

Choose the right Pilates class

Not all Pilates classes are equal. For example, if you’re looking to improve back pain, a large Pilates class (10+ people) in a gym, with a focus on fitness, probably won’t be suitable. Instead, opt for smaller classes (maximum of 8 people) with a Pilates instructor who has a Therapy background.
